Always On Energy Residential and small commercial Solar system education adding a battery.

Step 4:

Adding a battery instead of adding more PV for less than 25 % Sunlight days, is another option to add another day to the power available and even filter out a few mixed sunlight days. Although looking at the Global Solar Context, the estimated 45 days per year can sometimes be a week or two of continuous low sunlight.

Here follows the Global Solar Context

Johannesburg ranks among the top solar cities globally:

  • Annual average irradiance: ~5.8 kWh/day per kW

  • Winter average: ~4.8 kWh/day

  • 50% sunlight days: ~130/year

  • 25% sunlight days: ~45/year

This makes it a prime location for solar investment—especially with Eskom’s trajectory.

The Always On Energy Step 4/5/6 will be looking at battery management systems (BMS) and how the new client can make an informed choice regarding choosing a battery.
