Always On Energy Residential and Small business Solar clients education Step 2.

📘 The next level of Always On Energy education, is the reality that you cannot design a Solar system for 100% Sunlight in Johannesburg area to go Off Grid, so let us consider what is needed when PV power generation hits the 50% Sunlight Days.

🌤️ Context:

Johannesburg experiences ~120–150 days/year with partial cloud cover or reduced irradiance—some of those days will be your 50% sunlight days.

🔧 Strategy:

  • Battery remains unchanged in this design (still sized for 19.2 hours of autonomy, assuming 0.5kWh average during this time).

  • Solar generation drops to ~2.4 kWh/day per kW

  • Required PV for 25kWh per day = 25 á 2.4 ≈ 10.4 kW

🧠 Insight:

This design ensures clients remain grid-independent even on 50 % Sunny days. It’s a robust middle-ground for those not ready to overspend but still want resilience most of the time.

Step 3 will look at the reality of 25% Sunlight days and the choice to size the Solar system for this scenario using PV to do it.
